(Dream High 1 being nominated for The Rose d’Or)
=================

 Dear Baefamily,

Here are some of the information I gathered about The Rose d'Or :

HISTORY : some excerpts :
The Rose d’Or, international festival for entertainment television, was created in 1961 by Marcel Bezençon, then General Director Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG-SSR). Its aim was to help European public broadcasters to fill the gaps in their summer schedules with cost effective, good quality programmes. In 2004 the Festival moved from Lake Geneva to Lake Lucerne.

Marcel Bezençon’s idea was simple: Why not put together a really good international variety programme in Switzerland, then swap it for productions from other countries within the framework of a competition?

ABOUT The Rose d’Or Festival :

The Rose d’Or is one of the most important international festivals in entertainment television. It was founded in Montreux in 1961 and has taken place in Lucerne since 2004. Producers, executives from independent and public service broadcasters and heads of production companies from over 40 countries take part. The Rose d’Or is a significant networking and discussion forum for the entertainment television industry. The Festival concludes with an Awards Ceremony at which Golden Roses for the best television entertainment programmes of the year are presented. The Rose d’Or rewards originality, quality and creativity and sets the standard in entertainment television with these prestigious awards. The awards and the festival have evolved alongside the television industry
and reflect trends and developments in the global business. In 2009, it was taken over by the Swiss multinational media company Ringier.

Past winners [individuals] :
Barbara Streisand, The Muppet Show, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Liza Minnelli, Benny Hill, Monty Python, Cirque du Soleil, Julie Andrews, Mr Bean, Nigel Kennedy, Kurt Browning, Shirley Maclaine, and the list goes on.

Information about 2012 The Rose d’Or :The Rose d’Or Festival will take place from 6 to 10 May 2012 in Lucerne.

S. Korean drama gets international attention for creativity, K-pop power

KUALA LUMPUR ― “Dream High,” a Korean musical drama co-produced and distributed by KBS was nominated on Tuesday in the youth category of Rose d’Or, a global television festival in Switzerland.

The Korean drama was the only Asian program out of 36 nominated for one of 12 different categories at the festival in Lucerne, which runs from May 7-10.

The drama that portrays the passion and agony of teens dreaming about becoming stars will compete in the festival against BBC’s “Leonardo, Wing and a Prayer,” and “You’re Not a Werewolf” by West German Broadcasting.

The BBC show is an action-packed mystery and drama series about a teenage Leonardo da Vinci, while the German program follows a problem-solving Wolfman who gives advice to struggling teens. More than 400 programs from around the world were submitted for nominations.

“Recently, Korean dramas as well as K-pop are getting popular not only in Asia but also in Europe and the Americas. I think the jury gave higher marks because the program effectively combined the two power factors,” Cho Dae-hyun, president of KBS Media, told The Korea Herald at the Nominees Night in Kuala Lumpur.

Cast of “Dream High” (KBS)

KBS programs have been nominated for the Golden Rose Awards since 2006. In 2010, two programs by KBS ― “My Too Perfect Sons” and “The Golden Bell Challenge” ― were nominated. However, none have ever won a prize.

Cho said this year will be different because of the growing interest in K-pop all over the world, as well as the quality and creativity of South Korean dramas, which have matured over the years.

“The Korean entertainment industry is the one of the most competitive markets in the world. We train actors and singers for many years to create quality dramas as well as entertainment programs. And also we collaborate with world-renowned experts,” Cho said.

“I know the Rose d’Or festival is putting more focus on programs from Europe and the Americas and hopefully it also will be the place where more Asian works can be introduced,” he added.

“Dream High,” aired in early 2011, was produced by Bae Yong-jun, an actor who achieved pan-Asian fame with hit drama “Winter Sonata.” Bae also starred in the series.

The drama features K-pop stars including Taecyeon and Wooyoung from boyband 2PM, Ham Eun-jeong from girl group T-ara and singer IU. It was also partly produced by Park Jin-young, singer and producer for JYP Entertainment.

“Dream High,” gained a viewers’ rating of over 20 percent in Korea, and was exported to more than 20 countries in Asia and in Europe, said Cho of KBS Media, a KBS affiliate in charge of both domestic and overseas sales of the broadcaster’s content.

The drama drew attention from many Asian TV producers and managers who attended the Rose d’Or’s Nominees Night event in Kuala Lumpur, its first official event in Asia. The Swiss-based festival aims to bring more Asian programs to its annual event.

“The answer is simple: Asia’s television market is the second largest in the world and it is growing fast,” said Marc Walder, CEO of Ringier Switzerland and Germany. Ringier Switzerland is the largest media company in the country and the parent company of the Rose d’Or.

Founded in 1961 in Montreux, the Rose d’Or Festival is now held in Lucerne, Switzerland, and is one of the world’s most prestigious entertainment television festivals. It has become a platform and a marketplace for TV professionals, producers, managers of private and public TV stations and production companies from all over the world.

An international jury of 50 experts selects three nominees in each category. The winners in the 12 categories ― including comedy, sitcom, game show, live event show and TV movie ― and the Best of 2012 will be selected by a final, 10-member jury.

[News] From Heartthrobs to Hairdos, Welcome to the Korean Wave

source: JakartaGlobe
by Eduardo Mariz

South Koreans have long been proud of their “wave,” the soft-power juggernaut of boy bands, movies and products that have penetrated Southeast Asia in a big way in recent years. Imagine kimchi, the smelly, spiced, fermented cabbage so suited to Korean winters, catching on among Indonesians? But even that acquired taste has become hip, along with everything from haircuts to K-pop.

Since the first Korean dramas hit the airwaves, eating stinky vegetables and listening to K-Pop hasn’t been enough.

A huge K-wave fan, Dwi Hapsari is very familiar with the total impact of Korean culture in Indonesia. She has witnessed the swell of the Korean Wave, or Hallyu, since it landed here in 2007, interviewing several stars for Indonesian publications, fostering trade on entertainment products and now serving as marketing manager for the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) in Jakarta.

Since 2007, the number of Indonesians visiting Korea has increased by more than 240 percent, from 36,000 to 124,000; in 2012, Dwi hopes to see the figure reach 160,000.

The KTO uses Korea’s star power to sell the entire country, beginning with the opening of its office in June 2011 with a ceremony that include a performance by 4NE1, an Indonesian K-Pop-inspired band.

And KTO also depends on celebrity goodwill ambassadors. “We have [K-pop band] Super Junior promoting the food. Miss A, 2PM, Girls Generation … Bae Yong-Joon are all global ambassadors for [our program] ‘Visit Korea Year,’” Dwi said. “We are using their popularity and influence to introduce Korea as a travel destination. It’s a holistic approach, it helps a lot of businesses in Korea.”

Dwi’s office has also selected well-known Indonesians, celebrity chef William Wongso and model and actress Sandra Dewi, to be local ambassadors for Korean culture.

She thinks that many Indonesians are making Korea their travel destination because they want to experience what they see in films and dramas.

“They want to try something related to the artists, they want to experience their makeup, their fashion, their habits. They are trying to imitate their idols,” Dewi said.

[News] Jeon Do-yeon, Bae Yong-joon, Kong Yoo, Im Soo-jeong, next up is drama

source: Hancinema

http://www.hancinema.net/jeon-do-yeon-bae-yong-joon-kong-yoo-im-soo-jeong-next-up-is-drama-38849.html

Well known stop actors and actresses Jeon Do-yeon, Bae Yong-joon, Gong Yoo, Im Soo-jeong and more are looking into coming back with dramas. Jeon Do-yeon who is also known as 'the queen of Cannes" is well known for her quality movies, Hallyu star Bae Yong-joon who is known for his discerning eyes when it comes to choosing his work and Im Soo-jeong who has her fans craving for more of her on screens are into reading drama synopsis's these days.

These four people are number 1 when it comes to casting in Chungmuro for their experience and reputation. Jeon Do-yeon, Im Soo-jeong and Bae Yong-joon have been consistently getting love calls. However, these stars want dramas. Their commom hope is to come out with a new drama some time soon.

We can tell there has been a change of pattern amongst the main actors and actresses since last year. Those who have been in more movies acted as tow trucks on home screens. Han Seok-Kyu from "Deep-rooted Tree" was one and Sin Ha-gyoon from "Brain" was another. Actor Jang Dong-gun is also looking forward to a drama come back for the first time in twelve years.

Jeon Do-yeon's spokesperson told OSEN, "She is considering dramas rather than movies at the moment. She is looking through movies as well but she craves for drama more. She has gotten many offers but she hasn't found one she really likes yet".

"Maybe it's because of her nick name, 'the queen of Cannes', there is a preconception that Jeon Do-yeon only does movies. This isn't true. If there is a drama she wants to do then she will be glad to star in it. Her plan is to return with a drama within the year". Gong Yoo from the movie "The Crucible" is also planning on coming back with a drama.

Bae Yong-joon and Im Soo-jeong's spokesperson also claimed, "They are looking at dramas. Bae Yong-joon has a strong wish to star in a drama next and Im Soo-jeong hasn't done one since "Sorry, I Love You"".

All of them seem to have a strong desire to break the preconception that says they only work with movies.
