[Special Edition to Commemorate the Foundation of the Journal ①] Japan, Yonsama Syndrome has remained unchanged. Hallyu Department Stores are prosperous.

▶Enduring Popularity of ‘Yonsama’ Syndrome

“Yonsama,” Bae Yong Joon, set off a real Hallyu and his popularity has remained unchanged. The premium event for KBS’s drama “Dream High”, which Bae Yong Joon participated in as a producer, was held at Saitama Arena in the first part of this month. About fifteen thousand fans came to see the main cast: Taeck Yeon, Suzie, Kim Soo Hyun, and Bae Yong Joon. The drama event, not a concert, was beyond expectations.

Hundreds of Fans came to the hotel where Bae Yong Joon stayed. He has been using Baycourt Hotel at Odaiba, which is operated by a membership system, whenever he visits Tokyo for 2-3 years now, because his privacy can be protected there. But this time, there was an exception.

A more interesting story is at the Baycourt Hotel. It is located at Odaiba where anti-Hallyu was demonstrated. Within a few days, Odaiba changed from being a key base of anti-Hallyu demonstrations to the exact opposite. Bae Yong Joon’s agency, Keyeast stated, “Fans flocked to the hotel even though it was a rainy day, so we had to keep on asking them to leave. We couldn’t see any anti-Hallyu demonstrations or any related movements.”

[News Trans]Bae Yong Joon, “I’m a pet lover, too!” He was fascinated with the 3 months old dog’s cute acts.

enews24 Final editing 2011-09-22 10:05

[enews24 Reporter Lee In Kyaung] Bae Yong Joon joined a “Pet Lover” group. Recently he adopted a 3 month old white dog and has fallen into raising him/her. Currently, he lives alone at the house in Seongbuk-dong that was remodeled. It seems that he might be experiencing loneliness and emptiness since he has been living in a big house alone, but his dog is filling that empty space.

Someone who is related to him said, “He is raising his dog by his friends’ recommendations, but he already has fallen into his dogs’ cute acts. His dog is only 3 months old, but he is big as a man’s forearm. He seemed pleased when showing his dog to his friends while they were visiting his house.”

Recently, Lee Hyori, Eom Tae Woong, Lee Chae Young and Lee Yoon Ji raise dogs and cats. They are getting attention from the netizens as pet lovers because they take pictures with their pets. Someone related to the entertainers commented, “Entertainers are getting lots of comforts from their pets. We think this is positive because they are able to relax and relieve stress from the entertainment business while taking care of them.”

On the other hand, Bae Yong Joon is in full swing reviewing his return work for next year. He pays close attention to his come back work and KBS 2’s “Dream High 2” which his agency, Keyeast produces. His agency said, “It’s true that he is getting lots of offers from “Associated Channels” and others, but he hasn’t decided yet. Sometimes, he narrows down the choices and tries to make a decision, but he comes back after receiving more offers. But he is determined to return next year.”

[News] Drama is big business for tourism industry

Source: cantlivewithlosing's tumblr / koreajoongangdaily.jo…   / missindigo

Despite the rain that drizzled down on a recent day earlier this month, the front gate of Choong Ang High School in Gye-dong, central Seoul, was crowded with tourists, mainly from Japan and Malaysia, who were fussing with their cameras and trying to get a good shot of the place that served as the backdrop for the start of a lifelong love affair between the main characters in the 2002 drama “Winter Sonata”.

“I can’t believe I’m here”, one of the Japanese tourists said, blushing with excitement. “I’m a big fan of Yon-sama [as actor Bae Yong-joon is known in Japan] and his drama ‘Winter Sonata’. “

Across the way, fans flipped through posters of their favorite Korean stars at two small souvenir shops stocked with K-pop paraphernalia. According to the store owners, the most popular items, by far, are the posters of Bae and actress Choi Ji-woo, the two main characters in the drama that sparked the Korean Wave, or Hallyu, in Asia. Also attracting attention were star badges, postcards and cushions emblazoned with images of celebrities like actor Jang Geun-seok as well as K-pop bands like TVXQ, Girls’ Generation and Super Junior .

Song Yoon-ja, the owner of one of the two souvenir shops in front of the school, said she has served bus loads of foreign fans visiting the site as part of a popular tour program and she has witnessed the reciprocal effect on her business.

“I opened this shop seven years ago, and back then, it was mainly Japanese tourists who visited the school”, she said. “These days, however, they come from all over. There are not only tourists from Japan, but also China, Malaysia, Mexico and France”.

Song said the tour also includes stops at traditional areas nearby like Bukchon Hanok Village and Samcheong-dong. The village, located in between Gyeongbok Palace and Changdeok Palace, is known for its tight cluster of hanok, or Korean traditional houses. Samcheong-dong is lined with upmarket cafes, restaurants, galleries and boutiques.

The high school was the setting for three episodes of “Winter Sonata”, and local tour agencies report that tours that include this stop are the most popular programs among an increasing number of tourists from countries all over the world.

“We offer several tour programs that are sought by many foreign tourists”, said an official from H.I.S. Korea, a leading tour agency based in Japan. “And one of them includes a visit to Choong Ang High School along with other traditional sites nearby like Gyeongbok Palace and the Insa-dong area”.

When the romantic and bittersweet drama was first broadcast on Japan’s NHK, it created a buzz in Japan and a massive number of Korean Wave fans, triggering the Korean Wave. That, in turn, has had a significant effect on tourism and other related businesses, while boosting the local economy.

Actor Bae Yong-joon and actress Choi Ji-woo, bottom left, helped spark the Korean Wave with their starring roles in the 2002 drama “Winter Sonata”. The popularity of the show has drawn visitors to places where it has been filmed, including Choong Ang High School in Gye-dong, central Seoul, top left, and Nami Island in Chuncheon, Gangwon, right, where Japanese visitors take a stroll. [JoongAng Ilbo]

Popular Hallyu sites

Choong Ang High School is just one of the sites crowded with tourists reminiscing about scenes from their favorite drama. The school, however, is only open to the public on Sundays and every other Saturday, when there are no classes, meaning that tourists hoping to trace their favorite stars have to go elsewhere during the week. Luckily, there are a number of other sites to accommodate them.
On Nami Island in Chuncheon, Gangwon, fans can stroll down a long tree-lined path walked by the young lovers in “Winter Sonata”.

A mere 270,000 tourists visited the small island in 2001, but by last year, the number had shot up to 2 million. The island pulls in 20 billion won ($18 million) in sales per year, a major portion of which is contributed by visitors from Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore.

That number also gets a boost from the Korean Wave Express program offered by Korail Tourism Development, which is a subsidiary of Korail. The tour takes visitors to popular attractions from Korean dramas via the high-speed railway from Seoul to Chuncheon.

“Hallyu sites, including Nami Island, contribute greatly to drawing foreign tourists to Korea, which in turn helps the domestic economy”, said a Korea Tourism Organization official. “The Korean Wave helps boost the economy both directly and indirectly, and it does so more than we think”.

Visitors pose with a cardboard cutout of Lee Young-ae at “Dae Jang Geum” Theme Park in Yangju, Gyeonggi. In the photo at right, the actress appears with her costar, Ji Jin-hee, in the drama that gave the theme park its name.

The Dae Jang Geum Theme Park in Yangju, Gyeonggi, is also a popular site visited by drama fans, as it is the main location of the MBC drama “Dae Jang Geum” (“A Jewel in the Palace ”) starring top actress Lee Young-ae. According to the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute, the theme park is one of the 10 most frequently visited sites by foreigners in Korea.

Another popular tour takes visitors to neighborhoods in Seoul such as Samseong-dong in the southern part of the city, where many Korean Wave stars, including singer Rain and actresses Song Hye-kyo and Kim Nam-joo, live. This area, which is often referred to as the “Beverly Hills of Korea” by Korean Wave fans, also houses the stars’ management companies.

Haruka, a Japanese fan, was a recent visitor to the neighborhood.

“I recently visited the stars’ residences in Samseong-dong, and just thinking about the fact that stars frequent this area makes me happy”, she said.

Room for improvement

Despite the positive impact that tours and related products have had on the country’s economy, there are a growing number of travelers who say that most tour programs fall short of expectations because they are disorganized.

One reason for this may be that there is not a governmental tourism organization to run the programs. The Korea Tourism Organization currently offers no Korean Wave programs or travel packages. Instead, these are all run by private companies.

“Many of the trips and tours related to the Korean Wave are managed by private travel agencies”, the KTO official said. “Instead, we are in charge of overseeing the Korean Wave phenomena and coming up with favorable policies”.

And even private travel agencies do not sell tours wholly centered on the Korean Wave, instead offering short day trips or bus tours.

“We receive many inquiries about tours to Korean Wave sites, but we don’t offer specific programs related to that demand”, said an official from Hana Tour, the nation’s leading tour agency. “Instead, tourists can choose to add special trips or day tours to longer travel packages”.

Exclusive Interview, “To Families”

Q: You look a little slimmer compared to the last time when you visited Japan at the end of last year.

BYJ: Yes. Even my muscles have loosened up a bit. I have to exercise, but my condition is not at that stage yet. It seems like I’m going to train after multiple rehabilitations. Actually, I still can’t feel my second finger. It looks numb a bit and doesn't have much feeling.

Q: I heard that you started to raise a big dog. How about do you regain your health with a dog?

BYJ: My dog was vaccinated today, (September 4th). Now he/she can go outside. Dogs usually only follow their owners. But my dog follows everyone, even strangers. I like its personality. I don’t think he can be a watchdog.(laugh)

Q: Then, you, daddy, have to protect him. Thank you.

BYJ: Thank you.

[News Trans]Bae Yong Joon is just like my real brother; his presence is beyond imagination.

Source: suehan's blog

Oh my news 2011-09-17 10:25

We can’t forget Bae Yong Joon when we define Rep Yang Geun Hwan of Keyeast “Key Word”. Yang has been working with Bae Yong Joon over the last 10 years. Yang described his relationship with BYJ as, “Just like family, not only trust.”

“A love-hate relationship? There isn’t any hate, just love. He is just like my real brother. Even my wife calls him “Ajubeoni (suehan: brother-in-law)” I think we kept the relationship until now because we had complete faith each other.

In my career as a manager, I didn’t have much to say if I don’t talk about BYJ. I have been with him for so long, and our relationship will continue in the future as well. He is my mentor in life and at work.”

Bae Yong Joon is also his “Oh My Star” in his life. He said, “BYJ’s presence in my life is beyond imagination. He will be my ‘Oh My Star”. He also stated that “He influences me more as “a person than a star. He hasn’t worked for a long time, but he plans to return preferably with a drama than a movie,”

Yang has been living as someone’s manager for more than 10 years, not as “Yang Geun Hwan” himself. He said that he gains most strength when actors whom he are working with succeed. He looked back to the time when he had been deeply moved seeing Bae Yong Joon’s fans gathered at the airport.

On the other hand, there was a moment he didn’t want to face, an incident while meeting with BYJ’s fans. He also worked with Park Yong Ha. He said, “Last year, I was shocked tremendously when he passed away. Hopefully, it won’t happen again.”

“The Drastic Transformation” of entertainers is a daily topic in the entertainment industry. But Rep Yang prefers “Changes” to “Transformations”. In his opinion, it will naturally change when changes pile up and digestible spectrums are widened.

“Is it a right choice to dump everything to transform? There will be a great risk. I believe “Changes” are better than “Transformations”, unless turning points are necessary.”

[Repost] Nikkan Sports Interview

Repost from jaimie's blog

Hi hi .... our dear cloudnine was busy at work again! She translated the interview that Yong Joon gave to Nikkan Sports while he was in Tokyo. As usual, he puts in a lot of thoughts and sincerity in his response. Furthermore, you can feel his regrets towards his fans for not being able to show us more acting. Obviously his health is still not 100% as before, hope you'll get there soon, Yong Joon! Thanks cloudnine for always thinking of us :) Here it is ........

Nikkan Sports September 13 ‘Exclusive Interview with BYJ’
Here’s an exclusive interview with a Korean actor Bae Yong Joon (39).

While he was in Japan for the drama ‘Dream High’ Dvd release event, the interview with Nikkan Sports took place in a staff room of Saitama Super Arena. It’s seven years since the big hit of ‘Winter Sonata’ in 2004. The actor, who laid the foundation of the prosperity of Korean entertainment and who has been a permanent top star himself, told us frankly about who he is now. ( Interviewer; Hayato Kubo)

Q: You must be tired after the event. It’s been a while since you met your family (fans) , how do you feel now?

A: I’m most grateful and at the same time I feel sorry. Due to my health problem I was very sorry for not appearing much in the drama. I’m deeply sorry even for today’s event, because if I could sing or dance like my juniors I would have shown it. I wish to show my work as an actor, but it has not been decided yet, I feel terribly sorry for this too.

Q: For ‘Dream High’ you joined not only as an actor but also as a producer, how did you find it?

A: It was my first attempt, which put me in a different position from acting. I think I could see the parts which I had missed while I was working only as an actor. Also about the drama I could acquire the broader understanding and which was very helpful for acting. What I had no chance to see as only an actor , this time from a viewpoint of a production company I was able to see, and that is for example how the direction was and how the staff were working. Actors tend to be quite selfish on the set inevitably. For them acting is above everything else and building up character’s emotions is very important. So actors really don’t notice other things. Now I can look over such parts, but this doesn’t mean I don’t focus on my character or acting. I had no idea how much it costs to produce a drama, however now I understand how much we need.

Q: If you have an another chance, would you like to work as a producer again?

A: If I do so, my family might say something to me (laughs). For the time being I will be a full-time actor, however as for ‘Dream High 2’ I wish to be involved in the project at least. Actually here (in the dressing room of Saitama Arena) JYP and I were having a kind of meeting about the story. The theme for the drama is ‘dream’. In the event being asked ‘What is a dream?’, I answered that for me it’s a high ideal which I can’t reach. In the true sense fulfilling dreams or saying that the dream came true are very serious matter and difficult to do. It’s something like reaching an unreachable state of mind, that is what we call in Buddhism ‘attaining an enlightened state of mind’ I think. In today’s event JYP suggested me to become a director, which I consider one of my dreams rather than a goal. I have no idea if it’s possible or not, but for me it’s my dream.

Q: We are living in a tough world, difficult times in many ways. For young people it’s getting harder to pursue their dreams. For those people what kind of advice would you give?

A: I suppose young people don’t know much about the world yet. They just have no idea about what kind of jobs are there or, what kind of jobs they can do, so at any rate I want them to try a lot of things. I want them to make efforts to try anything. This may be called curiosity and I want them to see various things and feel them. Above all the most important thing is to do their best at this moment. Doing their utmost efforts now will lead them to their future, and it will also bring their dreams into shape. It will be a process to understand what dreams are .

Q: Fans who came to the event and who didn’t both care about how you will appear in the next work. About your new work do you mind sharing as much as possible at this stage?

A: First I will work on the ‘Dream High 2’ project and in addition I will return to my day job. I’m making my utmost effort in order to start shooting at the earliest possible time. However as there is nothing concrete, I can’t tell you anything, but I think I will do a drama.

Q: While you were filming the drama TWSSG you broke the ligament of the index finger, injured the cervical spine and shoulder ligament. Early this year you were hospitalized due to a herniated disk. How are you feeling now?

A: Actually I haven’t fully recovered yet. From old times they say ‘Health is above everything else’ , or ‘If you are in good health, you can do anything.’
These words deeply pierced me to the heart now. I vaguely thought that I would get well with time, but then I found that I hardly recovered just with time. So in order to really get healthy I’m making various efforts now.

The whole interview will be carried on a Asian entertainment Magazine ‘Choa’, 4th issue to be out on September 20th.

[Trans] From Sommelier Lee Joon Hyuk’s intervew

source: suehan's blog
suehan: I only translated the content related to BYJ.

Sommelier, Lee Joon Hyuk, recently released a book, “Wine & People” containing interviews of several famous people. He connects wine to the interviewee’s life and tells stories about his/her works, loves, successes and failures. His book has a total of 15 famous and honest stories of actors including Bae Yong Joon, Kim Hyun Joong, Lim Soo Jung, Choi Gang Lee, Baik Yoon Shik, director Lee Joon Ik, and others. He also shared useful information about decanting, breathing, and keeping wine. The publication is so meaningful because all of its profits will be donated to UNICEF Korea and Korean Federation for Environmental Movement.

Bae Yong Joon
2005 Domaine de la Romanee Conti, Romanee Conti

At the interview with Bae Yong Joon, Lee Joon Hyuk pulled the cork of from a bottle of wine, a 2005 Domaine de la Romanee Conti. Romanee Conti is regarded as “the best wine on the earth.” Lee Joon Hyuk considers it the most suitable wine for Bae Yong Joon, who is one of the best actors in Asia, not only in Korea. Romane Conti is the most expensive wine in the world. That’s why it’s extremely rare to find someone who has tried this wine. Whoever has tried it even once can’t forget the taste of it.

Bae Yong Joon recommended the publication to Lee Joon Hyuk. They casually met in 2007, and have closely befriended since then. Lee Joon Hyuk came to Korea for the publication of his book for a short time and stayed at Bae Yong Joon’s house.

“We met right after he had finished the filming of “TWSSG” and became close friends right away because of our similar taste in wine. He even suggested that I write a book about the stories of wine and people. I started to write a book because I was interested in his opinion about people’s stories, not just wine. But it wasn’t easy. (Haha)”

Bae Yong Joon, who was one of his interviewees, opened Bae Yong Joon’s house in Seongbuk-dong for the first time. Bae Yong Joon’s house was under repair before moving, but he actively helped Lee by rushing the wine cellar installation for the photo shooting for his book.

“It was just like visiting the artist’s house. It was a plain house with many books and art, and there wasn’t any expensive furniture. There was a tearoom. According to him, it was his favorite spot. Hyeong (BYJ)’s favorite teas were deokum tea (suehan: roasted tea) of Korea, puer tea and cheolgwaneum tea of China, and mal tea of Japan. I saw a spinning wheel make china and made me think that he had a deep knowledge of arts. He said that he would use dirt, trees, and rocks if he builds a house himself. (laugh)”

Bae Yong Joon is a famous wine lover who likes installing a wine cellar at the basement. His wine cellar was equipped with various kinds of wines. It is said that his collection is limitless since he has been collecting one or two at the local wine store and whenever he has traveled abroad. There are inexpensive daily wines and expensive wines as well. Whenever his acquaintances visit his house, he hosts a blind wine tasting, not telling its price, kind, origin, and vintage. He really likes to see them concentrating on its flavor. It’s said that he can even distinguish between a “1982 Château Mouton Rothschild” and “1982 Château Latour”. They are very difficult wines to distinguish; only experts can tell the difference.

It’s said that he started gaining interest in wine when he traveled to France alone in the middle of the 1990s. He got to the hotel and tried a few bottles of wine that he purchased. He wasn’t able to taste any special flavors at that moment, but when he tried the wine again the next afternoon, its astringent taste disappeared and the soft flavor remained. The air and wine caused oxidation and it made the taste and flavor soft. He was fascinated by its elegant, brilliant flavor and started enjoying wine since that time. That fortunate wine was a “1982 château Margau”.

Mr. Bae lives in the neighborhood and enjoys rice and soup which is worth $2.50.

Bae Yong Joon’s nickname listed on Lee Joon Hyuk’s cell phone is “Mr. Bae in the neighborhood”. They used to live in the same area, Samseong-dong. They got close quickly because of the close proximity and their love for wine. Now, they live together and even travel together.

“We once went to the wine tasting event which was held in Busan. It was a good opportunity to taste the best Romanee Conti vintage wines, but I drank them all, even his, because he had to drive. I fell asleep and even snored in the car. He told me later that I was the first person who fell asleep while he was driving (laugh). He told me that he asked his managers not to drive excessively, because he realized how hard it was when he drove to Busan and returned to Seoul. He is truly a caring person.”

He said that Bae Yong Joon carries a humble attractiveness, not like top stars. It seems that he has a feast every meal, but he enjoys $2.50 rice and soup and cooks at home. He is known as a perfectionist of self-management. He said that he always sees Bae Yong Joon on the running machine the next morning after drinking together the night before. He also said that Bae Yong Joon is talented in various areas other than acting such as taking photos, art, and even cooking.

“Hyeong (BYJ) enjoys taking photos as much as he likes carrying both film cameras and digital cameras. He held an exhibition at Mori-Gallery in Japan. He said that he had to click the shutter when he felt something while looking at a subject. He said the techniques could be improved, but not the feelings.”

Once, he met Bae Yong Joon and a photographer, Bae Byung Woo. At that time, they talked about the professional aspects of camera models and camera techniques. On that day, a photographer Bae Byung Woo suggested shootings in Jeju to Bae Yong Joon who was interested in having shoots.

“Hyeong injured his neck while filming “TWSSG” and he was hospitalized in the early part of this year. He still suffers from it. Meanwhile, he enjoys reading two or three books a week. I am often surprised by his excellent knowledge and way with words. It probably comes from his energetic reading.”

It is said that he eats food that is a little bland and insufficient. He cooks very well and even makes kimchee. He learned how to cook from his mother’s dishes and cooks with recipes from cookbooks. As a younger brother, he is sad to see Bae Yong Joon remain single even though he has everything he needs.

“He joked by saying, “How can you get married before me” when I had gotten married. I hope he meets a nice girl. His ideal girl is a physically and spiritually well-balanced girl.”

He appeared in KBS’s drama “Dream High” shortly, and he has had time to recharge himself. But, it is said that he plans to return this year and it seems that it is likely we will see him on TV.
